I wanted to give a tour/crash course on automation systems, so I put together a video showing some of what an automation system can do. I ran through everything kind of fast, so I will do more videos getting into more details on specific functions of sub systems, like lighting, audio, security, etc. This video also shows my RGBW Controller working in my house. 🙂
The system I have is an HAI Omni Pro II. I have been installing automation systems since 2005, and they have proven to be an awesome choice.
For a future project, I would like to replace the Omni with a BeagleBone. 🙂

Great video. I was a little bummed when it was over. What would you recommend to someone who would like to learn more about the engineering and designing of home automation?
I just wonder what is the power consumption of your whole HA system when in idle.
Any idea ?
I’m not sure, I’ll measure it when I get a chance. 🙂
Very cool stuff, thank you for sharing. I’m in the process of buying my first home and I’ve been researching automation. I’m a service tech for a honeywell security & automation company who uses zwave & Total Connect. I’m a DIY kinda guy on a budget and I want something different for my home. I’m unfamiliar with the hardware and hours of web research is overwhelming me. I would like to hire a consultant as knowledgeable as yourself to help me decide which products will suit my home & needs, but I live in a small town in Arizona. If I recorded a video with my home and what I’d like to do with it, would you be willing to offer some pointers?
What brand of light switches are those in your video? The ones that have the double click commands.
Hi Michael, they are 600W dimmers from HAI. You can check them out here:
